The essential amino acid L-lysine is one of the three amino acids with basic side chains, and is hydrophilic in character. It contains an N-butyl amino group in the side chain, and this moiety is protonated at physiological pH. In addition, L-lysine is one of the two purely ketogenic amino acids, or amino acids that are degraded to give ketone bodies.
Lysine is degraded in vivo to give acetoacetyl CoA via an initial transamination with α-ketoglutarate.
L-lysine has been used with cultured human osteoblasts to study cell proliferation.Exogenous L-lysine has been utilized in Nocardia lactamdurans to enhance cephamycin C production. The inhibition of the chymotrypsin-like activity of a proteasome preparation by various amino acids, including lysine, has been investigated. A stable isotope MALDI-TOF mass spectrometry method for the detection of lysine in cultivated Corynebacterium glutamicum has been described.

L-Lysine – A Key Nutrient
Lysine is a key nutrient related to the production performance and considered as the first- or second- limiting amino acid in a typical corn-soybean based diet for most species. CJ L-Lysine HCl Feed Grade is produced by microbial fermentation (Corynebacterium Glutamicum) with natural raw materials (raw sugar, beet molasses, cane molasses, or SOD) which helps to improve performance of animals and to lower users’ production costs. This product is used only for animals.
Lysine is the first-limiting amino acid in corn-soybean diets for swine and second limiting, after Methionine, in poultry. Nadlex Canada Inc.’s L-Lysine HCl [Feed Grade] contains a minimum of 98.5% L-Lysine monohydrochloride (on a dry matter basis).
Corn, which comprises the largest portion of monogastric diets, is low in lysine. In order to meet the amino acid requirements of swine and poultry, high-protein ingredients such as soybean meal and animal by-product meals are blended with corn. In the past, excess protein was fed to meet the
requirement of the first limiting amino acid. With the commercialization of L-Lysine, nutritionists have more flexibility with utilizing nontraditional feed ingredients, which may improve profitability without loss of feed quality. As a result, the lysine requirement of livestock can be met in a cost-effective manner by reducing the amount of costly, high-protein ingredients that were once fed.
Many studies have demonstrated that today’s leaner, faster growing swine genotypes respond to higher levels of dietary Lysine when compared to the same pigs fed average type diets. This translates into leaner pigs, improved feed efficiency, and improved carcass yield and better margins over feed costs. Similar studies with poultry have shown an improvement in breast meat yield.
